Design Trends Going Strong Into 2021

The start of the New Year is a perfect time to pause and take a look at the current design trends we are seeing in the industry. It’s no surprise the Pandemic has played a major influence for some of these new, evolving trends. Now more than ever we are seeing the need for more adaptable, flexible, and private spaces within our homes and some major changes being made.

I’ve put together a quick list of design trends that are thriving in 2021 for you all to check out!

Earthy Color Tones: Bring the outdoors into your home through earthy color tones to add comfort to your live-work home environment. If you haven’t noticed already, green cabinets are having a major moment right now for kitchens and bathrooms. Whether it's a a soft sage or deep fern green- we are seeing lots of green paint within cabinetry. Bright white walls are starting to fade away and instead a warmer white is more desirable. The 2021 color pallet across all major paint brands reads warm, approachable, earthy and harmonious with terracotta hues, light greens, blues, and deep reds and plums.

Handmade, Hand Glazed Tiles: We’ve been seeing the rise of handmade, hand glazed tiles [also referred to as Zellige moroccan tiles] over the past few years within the industry- adding subtle color variation for backsplashes and in showers, and I’ve got to say I am here for it!

I recently installed a hand glazed, thin brick by Fireclay Tile for a Kitchen remodel (as pictures below) and it is GORGEOUS with just the right amount of color variation within the tiles. It really added a nice amount of texture to the space without being too busy and overwhelming.

Wallpaper: From colorful and bold prints to grasscloth and vinyl offerings for texture, wallpaper is going full steam into 2021 and people aren’t afraid of it! We are seeing a bigger demand for it within bathrooms, dining spaces, ceilings, offices, headboard walls, nurseries, and accented within built-ins. For those that aren’t up for the long-term, high-dollar commitment, we’re also seeing the peal and stick applications in a lot more design offerings from vendors across the board. Although it’s a nice idea [peal and stick] I personally do not recommend it- as it can tedious and messy application, a lot more room for error, and honestly just doesn’t look as good in the end result. I stand by my recommendation to go all-in and have the paper of choice professionally applied, as smoothing the walls is the most important step for a sleek install and beautiful outcome.

Multi-Functional Spaces: Our homes just got a lot smaller with the new norm of staying in, working from home, and virtual learning all under the same roof. With that being said, the need for more flexible, adaptable, “multi-functional” spaces is here... and here for the foreseeable future.

We are seeing a lot of people converting rooms into home offices, home gyms, and adding desks into bedrooms to create privacy.

For this Austin home, I converted an unused room [positioned by the entry] into a beautiful sitting room, along with a sleek modern desk that blends well with the design of the space, making it a functional home-office workspace, too.

Earth Elements: Not just earthy color tones but also ALL earthy elements are making their way into residential design this year. We are seeing a lot of design that mixes wood tones within furnishings, spaces that incorporate wood ceiling treatments for warmth, real stones within kitchen countertops maximizing on the movement within the stones for statement islands, and more REAL living plants in our homes! So on that note…ditch the faux plants, man-made quartz, and mix up the wood species for more earthy vibes in 2021.
